Prokaryotic Cells and Viruses - 3.6 Flashcards
Do prokaryotic cells contain a nucleus?
No they contain circular DNA that floats freely in the cytoplasm
What other structures are found in prokaryotic cells?
• flagellum• plasma membrane • cell wall• plasmids • ribosomes• Genetic material (DNA)• mesosome • capsule
What is a plasmid?
Rings of DNA floating freely in the cytoplasm
How does the cell wall differ from a eukaryotic cell?
It is not made of cellulose or chitin
How does flagella in prokaryotic cells differ from eukaryotic?
It is made of the protein flagellum and us arranged in a helix
How do the ribosomes differ?
They are a lot smaller (70s)
Give an example of a prokaryotic cell:
Bacteria cell such as cholera
Can normal microscopes be used to see the internal structure of prokaryotic cells?
NoAn electron microscope is necessary
What is a mesosome?
The site of respiration
What is a capsule?
A protective device (slime layer)
How big are prokaryotic cells?
Extremely small cells ( less than 2 micrometers in diameter)
