Prokaryotic Cells Flashcards
What is a prokaryotic cell?
What are the characteristics of a prokaryotic cell?
A cellular organism without a nucleus, which is small + simple.
Cell division by fission, single chromosome present, nucleotide not surrounded by membrane, membrane organelles are absent.
What is the function of the mesosome?
It helps to perform cellular respiration, dna replication + cell division. This increases the surface area of the cell membrane.
What is the function of the flagellum?
Used as sensory organelles that can detect changes in temperature and pH. Microscopic hair like organelle used to propel a cell through liquid.
What is the function of the cell wall?
A structure surrounding the cell which gives strength and support.
What is the function of the plasmid?
Produces toxins or kills other organisms to increase the chance of survival of an organism.
What is the function of the bacterial chromosome?
Genetic material of bacterium. Compacts dna and supports gene regulation.
