Prokaryotic Cells Flashcards
What is a eukaryotic cell?
A cell with a nucleus
Are animal and plant cells prokaryotic or eukaryotic?
Eukaryotic
What is a prokaryotic cell?
A cell with NO nucleus
Where is the DNA stored in a prokaryotic cell?
Free in the cytoplasm
Are bacteria prokaryotic or eukaryotic?
Eukaryotic
Name 2 things that bacteria cells lack compared to plant cells:
- Mitochondria
- Chloroplasts
Describe the genetic material in a bacteria cell:
Single loop of chromosomal DNA free in the cytoplasm. Carries most of the bacterial genes
Describe the plasmids in a bacteria cell:
Some bacteria have extra circle of DNA, these contain additional genes not found in the chromosomes
Describe the flagella in a bacteria cell:
Enables movement, can have more than one, rotates
Describe the slime capsule in a bacteria cell:
Protects the cell and helps cause disease, not always present
