Prokaryotic Cells Flashcards
What does prokaryote mean?
Organisms whose cells lack a nucleus and other membrane bound organelles
Genetic material is in the form of a molecule of “circular” double stranded DNA
Cell wall function
Physical barrier, excludes some substances
Protects against mechanical damage and osmotic lysis
What does the cell wall contain?
Murein, a glycoprotein
Cell surface membrane function
Semi permeable, controls what goes in and out
Ribosomes size
70s, small, simple
Ribosome function
Protein synthesis
Circular strand of DNA
Carries genetic information for replication of bacterial cells by the process of binary fission
Plasmid function
Contain genes that aid survival
Capsule function
Protects from other cells
Helps bacteria stick together for protection
Flagella function
Used for locomotion
Virus
Acellular, non living particles
Contain nucleic acids enclosed in a protein coat or capsid
Only replicate inside living host cells
May be surrounded by lipid envelope
Capsid or envelope have attachment proteins that allow the virus to identify and attack to host cells
