Prokaryotic Flashcards
What are the differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells?
prokaryotic cells are smaller
prokaryotic cells contain no membrane-bound organelles
prokaryotic cells have no nucleus and smaller ribosomes
What do prokaryotic cells contain instead of a nucleus?
A single, circular loop of DNA free in the cytoplasm.
What is the cell wall like in prokaryotic cells?
Contains murein (a glycoprotein)
What is a plasmid?
Small loops of DNA which only carry a few genes e.g antibiotic resistant gene (if present)
What is a capsule?
A slimy layer made of protein, it prevents the bacteria from desiccating (drying out) and protects the bacteria against the host’s immune system.
What is the flagella?
Tail that rotates at the base to enable movement.
