Prokaryotes Flashcards
What are two major groups of prokaryotes?
Bacteria and archae
Compare the size of a eukaryotic cell, a bacterium and an archae?
Eukaryotes are 10x larger than the bacteria, bacteria are 10x larger than archae
What are some of the differences between eukaryotes and prokaryotes
Organelles, size, extremists
How do some prokaryotes move?
Flagella or cilia?
What are endoscopes? What are they good for?
Endospores are prokaryotic cells that are surrounded by a thick cell wall, allows cells to survive in inhospitable habitats.
What are extremophiles? Name two examples.
Mathonofiles, thermofiles
What are pathogens?
Cause disease
What is bioterrorism
Using biological agents as a terrorist threat
What is bioremediation?
Remove pollutants. Ex: bacteria that eats oil
What are protists?
Eukaryotes that don’t belong to plants, animals or fungi. Ex: protozoan(animal like), algae( plant like), ameba (fungus like)
What are slim molds?
Fungus like protists
Name two reproductive barriers that will maintain species boundaries?
Behavioral isolation, mating time, habitat isolation mechanical incompatibility, gamete incompatibility, hybrid weakness
