Prokaryotes 2 Flashcards
describe gram (+) bacteria
- take up gram stain (purple)
- thick layer of peptidoglycan
- NO outer layer/membrane
- tend to be less virulent (less sick)
describe gram (-) bacteria
- don’t take up gram stain (pink)
- thin layer of peptidoglycan
- outer membrane w/ lipopolysaccharides
- tend to be more virulent (more sick)
what are endotoxins?
toxins that are present inside a bacterial cell
what are exotoxins?
toxins secreted by both gram (-) and gram (+) bacteria
- NOT part of the cell wall
what is chemotaxis?
oriented movement toward or away from a chemical stimulus
what are the four modes of nutrition?
- chemo
- photo
- auto
- hetero
what is chemo nutrition?
using organic compounds as their food
what is photo nutrition?
organisms that use sunlight as an energy source
what is auto nutrition?
organisms that get their food from inorganic sources
what is hetero nutrition?
consume organic substances
what is a capsule?
an additional layer of the cell wall
- its sticky and they help the bacteria to stick to surfaces
what is an endospore?
thick, resistant cells
- produced due to environmental challenges
what is bioremedation?
use of organisms for the removal of pollutants from the environment
