Projections Flashcards
Process
Bony prominence
Eminence
Bony projection, less prominent than a process
Spine
Longer, thinner, sharper process than an eminence (Ex. Scapula)
Tuberosity
Large, roughened eminence, variable shape, usually site of tendon (muscle to bone) or ligament (bone to bone) attachment (Ex. Deltoid)
Tubercle
Smaller tuberosity, small rougened eminence where tendons and ligaments attach (Ex. Shoulder muscles= great & lesser tubercles)
Epicondyle
Nonarticular projection adjacent to condyle (Ex. Medial Epicondyle= proximal to the elbow joint & adjacent to the medial articular surface)
Trochanter
Two large, prominent, blunt, rugose processes (FEMUR)
Ridges
More linear elevation, often roughened (Ex. Medial & lateral above distal end of humerus)
Crest
Prominent, usually sharp and thin ridge of bone, often forms b/w adjacent muscle masses (Ex. Femur)
Line
A long, raised, linear surface, not as sharp as a crest (Ex. Femur)
