projectile motion Flashcards

1
Q

projectile motion

A
  • refers to the movement of either an object or the human body as they travel through the air
  • as soon as the ball is thrown, kicked or hit , it becomes projectile
  • the human body acts as a projectile in sporting situations like a vault in gymnastics or a long jump

Q

angle of release

factors affecting the horizontal displacement of a projectile

A
  • to throw an object as far as possible
  • the angle of realse from the performers hand is important
  • the optimum angle of realse is dependant upon realse hight and landing height

Q

release is equal to landing

factors affecting the horizontal displacement of a projectile - angle

A
  • when the relase height is equal to the landing height
  • the optimum angle of release is 45 degrees
  • ingoring air resistance and gravity

Q

realise is below landing

factors affecting the horizontal displacement of a projectile - angle

A
  • the release height is below the landing height
  • the optimum angle of realise is greater than 45 degree
  • E.G the basketball shot (the ring is the landing height)

Q

realse is greater than landing

factors affecting the horizontal displacement of a projectile - angle

A
  • if the release height is greater than the landing height
  • the optimum angle of realise needs to be less than 45 degress
  • E.G shot put (relase height is higher than the point of landing (ground))

Q

speed of release

factors affecting the horizontal displacement of a projectile

A
  • the greater the release velocity of a projectile, the greater the horizontal displacement travelled
  • E.G in the shot put, the speef of the shift or rotation across the circle ensures that the shot leaves the hand at maximum velocity - achieving the greatest orizontal displacement

Q

height of release

factors affecting the horizontal displacement of a projectile

A
  • the greater release height also results in an increase horizontal displacement
  • gravity is always acting on the mass of a shotput, which therofroe means that a shot putter should aim to realise at the height point
  • if the height release is lower the athelte will have to manipulate both their angle and velocity of release

Q

shot put (true parabola)

factors affecting flight paths of different projectiles

A
  • projectiles with a large weight force will have small air restistance forces and will follow a true parabolic flight path
  • as the shot put has a large mass , there will be a longer weight arrow than air resistance

Q

badminton

factors affecting flight paths of different projectiles

A
  • longer the flight path , the longer the air resistance
  • projectiles with a lighter mass, the effects of air restiance will cause a true parabola to become a disroted one
  • a shuttle has a lighter mass and an unusal shape that increase air resistance
  • slows down and the effect of air resitance reduces

Q

vector components of parabolic flight (shot put)

factors affecting flight paths of different projectiles

look at diagram

A
  • a shot put follows a parabolic flight path and it is realsed at an angle to the horizontal, its initial velocity has a horizontal component and a vertical component
  • a vertical component can only be affected by gravity which is why the vertical component decreases during flight
  • air resistance is negligible so both horizontal and vertical components are unaffected by air restiance
  • this means the horizontal component remains constant throughout flight
  • also possible to add the horizontal and vertical vectors together to get a resultant vector
