Specifying for Sustainability - Division 01 General Requirements

A

A separate spec section to set the goals and general direction of the project for sustainability and environmental quality. A summary of the environmental goals addressing: 1. resource-efficient material and systems; 2. energy conservation; 3. indoor air quality. If seeking LEED, individual credits requirements by LEED may be listed. Required submittals from the contractor includes 1. manufactured certificates of recycled contents 2. certificates of certified wood 3. material emission test reports 4. MSDS (material safety data sheets) Requirements for test / procedures of materials to meet standards. Hazardous materials list. Minimize construction pollution and impact to environments.

Specifying for Sustainability - Individual Spec

A

specify products with local products, recycled contents, low VOCs, energy efficiency, cleaning and maintenance requirements, certification by a third party.

Spec writing guidelines

A
  1. use current standards and test methods 2. avoid specify test methods and end result / product the same time. 3. avoid using standards tat cannot be measured. 4. avoid exculpatory clauses 5. avoid ambiguous words 6. keep short 7. one major idea in each paragraph
