Project Management Overview Flashcards
Project Lifecycle
Includes all of the activities in the project from when it starts to when it ends.
- Starting the project
- Organizing and preparing
- carrying out the work
- closing the project
Key Life Cycle Characteristics
Relationship between project life cycle and product life cycle
A project life cycle and product life cycle may run concurrently. More typically, a project life cycle will fall within the product life cycle. Product life cycle may include several project life cycles
The Product Life Cycle
Includes all the activities that take place from the creation of a product to the end of its production or use.
- Product inception and development
- Market Introduction
- market growth
- market maturity
- sales decline
Cost of changes
As project progresses….
- stakeholder influence, risk and uncertainty decrease,
- Cost of changes increase
Phases
Groups of activities that make up a project, logical divisions on how the work is carried out
Phase Characteristics
- Sequential
- distinct work
- repeat processes
- end with handoff - deliverable
- have natural end points
Phase Life Cycle Structures
- Predictive/ waterfall/ plan driven
- Iterative/ rolling wave planning
- Incremental
- Adaptive life cycle
Waterfall Life Cycle
aka preditcive or plan driven
Time, cost and scope are determined early, then phases are executed sequentially
Iterative Life Cycle
aka Rolling wave planning
Scope is tentatively determined early in the project then clarified as the project proceeds and more information becomes known.
Focus is on near future planning. Work in early phases is carried out while later phases are still in planning
Incremental Life Cycle
Each phase successively adds to functionality of product. Each phase end is marked with a deliverable
Adaptive life cycle
aka change driven or agile
Iterative and incremental
High degree of customer involvement. Is used for projects where scope frequently changes.
Starting the Project
Determine the need for the project and determine its feassibility and project goals
Organizing and preparing
Conduct research and use the results to design a prototype or service for testing. Prepare and implement schedule, identify targets within the project and distribute tasks and resources
Carrying out the work
Getting materials and building the product or service as well as QA and modifications and delivery prep
