Project Management Flashcards
Project
*A temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result.
*The temporary nature of projects indicates a definite beginning and end.
End of a Project
a) When the project’s objectives have been achieved
or
b) when the project is terminated because its objectives will not or cannot be met
or
c) when the need for the project no longer exists.
Project Management
The application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements.
Macro-processes for project management accomplishment
1) Project initiation or kick-off;
2) Planning
3) Executing
4) Monitoring
5) Closing
Planning
Starts by defining available time, people, and budget;
Executing
Allowing things to happen, reacting to impediments, to achieve as planned.
Monitoring
Tracking performance and resource utilization.
Closing
Provide visibility to all stakeholders about end results with emphasis on time, people and cost.
Considering the capstone project: INITIATE
1) Identify team members (two partners)
2) Identify project offers of interest:
a) Identify “adequate” project sites of interest. b) Review available “request for capstone projects” (RFCP) c) Help the project owner prepare the RFCP d) Assess that the project complies with the capstone project guidelines (two or three IE core subject areas plus economic analysis) e) Finetune the RFCP as needed
Considering the capstone project: PLAN
1) Given the RFCP, visit the site and understand the project requirements and scope
2) In conversations with the mentor, identify who are the stakeholders and personnel to become involved in the project
Considering the capstone project: PLAN (Project Charter)
1) Prepare the project charter (PChar) gaining agreement with the mentor, emphasizing time allocation and deliverables.
2)Define activities and work breakdown structure (WBS)
Considering the capstone project: PLAN (Gantt Chart)
1) Develop a preliminary Gantt chart
a) Consider the sequence in activities
and their duration
b) Plant personnel that should participate besides students c) Agreement with mentor
2)Deliver the project charter to the responsible faculty (IE Department).
Considering the capstone project: PLAN (Goals)
Goal statements:
*Goals are statements that describe what this project will achieve and deliver.
1) Goals should be “SMART”: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-Based.
2)The completion of a goal should be evident through the creation of one or more deliverables.
Considering the capstone project: PLAN (Methodology)
- Identify the specific areas of expertise that your particular project addresses (three or four, always including the latter).
1) Work Systems Design, and Motion and Time Study.
2) Probability and Statistics, and Statistical Quality Control.
3) Production Planning and Control.
Operations Research (includes Computer Simulation Modeling).
4) Plant Layout
5) Automation and Information Technology.
6) Engineering Economics and Managerial and Cost Accounting. (required for all projects)
WBS
Subdivision of project deliverables and work into smaller, more manageable components
