Chloramphenicol
May cause aplastic anemia in humans. banned in all food animals. (Prohibited because they cause toxic reaction).
Thiamfenicol
Not approved in USA. (Prohibited because they cause toxic reaction).
Florfenicol
Can be used in pigs and cattle. Does not cause aplastic anemia in humans.
Do not give to dairy cattle >20 months, veal calves, calves under 1 year old , or calves on an all-milk diet. (Prohibited because they cause toxic reaction).
Clenbuterol
FDA approved for use in horses with airway constriction.
Illegal for use in food-producing animals. Residues pose a threat to people. “Zero-tolerance” for residues. (Prohibited because they cause toxic reaction).
Pehnylbutazone
Can induce blood disorders such as aplastic anemia. Prohibited in female dairy cattle >20 months and discouraged in other food animals. (Prohibited because they cause toxic reaction).
Diethylstilbestrol (DES)
Prohibited in all food animals. No longer marketed in USA. In the past, has lead to reproductive issues in humans. (Prohibited because they cause cancer).
Nitroimidazoles
Linked to mutagenicity and carcinogenicity. Illegal in food animals. (Prohibited because they cause cancer).
Nitrofurans (Nitrofurazone & Furazolidone)
Systemic and topical use banned in food animals. Carcinogen. (Prohibited because they cause cancer).
Sulfonamides
Carcinogenic. Banned in adult dairy cattle (>20 months)/ Use of Sulfadimethoxine according to label is allowed in adult dairy cattle. no ELDA allowed.
Sulfadimethoxine
Can use ACCORDING TO LABEL in adult dairy cattle. No ELDU allowed (cannot compound it)
Fluoroquinolones
Use is illegal in poultry. Can use ACCORDING TO LABEL for beef cattle, non lactating dairy cattle, swine, and calves (excluding veal calves). (Prohibited due to antimicrobial resistance).
Glycopeptides (Vancomycin)
Vancomycin is the only product used in VetMed.
Last resort treatment for MRSA infections.
No approved vet products – so no Food Animals.
(Prohibited due to antimicrobial resistance).
Cephalosporins
No ELDU allowed in food-producing animals. (Prohibited due to antimicrobial resistance).
Can use ELDU for Cephapirin
Anitvirals in poultry
None labeled in USA. Now prohibited in chickens, turkeys, and ducks. (Prohibited due to antimicrobial resistance).
Genetian Violet
NOT FDA approved –> banned by FDA
