26th president. Contributed in trust busting, and helped build the Panama Canal. Helped to negotiate and end the Russo-Japanese War. Prevented WWI at Algeciras Conference.
Theodore Roosevelt
27th president. Was endorsed by Roosevelt because he pledged to carry on progressive program, then never did.
W. Howard Taft
28th president. Known for WWI leadership, creating the Federal Reserve, Federal Trade Commission, Clayton Antitrust Act, progressive income tax, lower tariffs, women’s suffrage, Treaty of Versailles, sought 14 points post war plans, League of Nations (failed to be ratified), won Nobel Peace Prize.
Woodrow Wilson
Governor of Wisconsin from 1901-1906. Progressive republican leader. His “Wisconsin Idea” was the model for state progressive government. He was denied nomination by republicans in favor of Theodore Roosevelt.
“Fighting Bob” LaFollette
Progressive activist. Founded the Hull House, a settlement home designed as a welfare agency for needy families.
Jane Addams
Author of “How the Other Half Lives” which describes the conditions of immigrants in NYC living in the slums.
Jacob Riis
Author of “The Shame of the Cities” which exposed corrupt alliances between the government and big businesses. Also targeted living conditions and political machines in cities.
Lincoln Steffans
Author of “History of the Stand Oil Co.” which targeted Rockefeller’s tricks and manipulation.
Ida B. Tarbell
African American journalist, abolitionist, and feminist who led an anti-lynching crusade. Founded National Association of Colored Women, and NAACP

Booker T Washington’s opp, led the Niagara Movement in 1905.
WEB duBois
Women’s activist who opposed laws that limited women’s working abilities.
Alice Paul
Leader in the movement to legalize birth control. Opened the first birth control clinic.
Margaret Sanger
Author of “The Jungle” which exposed the abuses of the meat packing industry.
Upton Sinclair
Leader of socialist party in America, led the Pullman Strike.
Eugene Debs
Gives congress power to collect income tax.

The Senate shall be composed of two senators from each state.

Prohibited the manufacturing of alcohol.

Both genders can vote.
19th
Argument was based on whether a woman’s liberty to negotiate a contract with an employer should be equal to a man’s. Decision was affirmed by the Supreme Court that Oregon state law was constitutional, so states could restrict women’s working hours.
Muller v Oregon
Strike organized by mine workers in 1902. Happened in eastern Pennsylvania threatening to cut off major supply of energy to large cities.
