Muckrakers
Journalist and authors that exposed the economic, social and political problems during progressive era. Muckraking articles and books increased public support for progressive reforms.
Progressive movement
Political and social movement focused on reforming the problems that developed in American society as a result of the Industrial Revolution. The progressive movement frequently used new laws, regulations, amendments and government agencies to try to reform economic and social problems in America.
Prohibition
The 18th amendment was a progressive reform that outlawed alcohol in the US. The difficulty enforcing the prohibition of alcohol led to the repeal of the 18th amendment during the 1930s.
Woman suffrage/19th amendment/Susan B. Anthony
Suffrage is the right to vote. During the progressive era, reformers like Susan B.Anthony lead the movement to pass the 19th amendment which required every state to allow women the right to vote.
Regulation
Regulation is when the government creates rules that businesses must follow. The meat inspection act created cleanliness regulations that meatpacking companies were required to follow.
Conservation
Progressive reformers helps to conserve America’s resources by creating national Parks and wildlife preservation areas. These conservation program set aside large areas of land that were not open for development and preserved the natural beauty of the area.
Reform
A reform is a change designed to fix a problem. The progressive movement created performs to improve the society, economy, and government in America. Many of these reforms were either laws, amendments, or government agencies.
The jungle
Muckraking book written by Upton Sinclair that intensified popular support for food regulations like to meat inspection act.
Ida Tarbell
Muckraker that wrote primarily about John Rockefeller standard oil trust and the growing power of monopolies/trusts in America. Tacos work increase support for antitrust laws and for the breaking up (busting) of trusts.
Pure food and drug act
Progressive reform that required accurate labeling and ingredients in food and medicines.
Meat inspection act
Progressive reform that established cleanliness standards for meat processing factories and product and enforced these standards with government inspections.
Trust Busting
The breaking up of monopolies and trusts by the government in order to promote competition. Teddy Roosevelt was known as the trustbuster for breaking up several trusts. Taft Wilson also continued the process of breaking up trusts/monopolies.
Election of 1912
Theodore Roosevelt ran for president as the head of the progressive or Bullmoose party. Roosevelt popularity with Republican voters allowed the Democratic candidate Woodrow Wilson to win the election over Taft. Wilson became the first Democrat and the last president of the progressive era.
Federal Reserve system
Progressive era reform that created the national banking system that regulates the banking activity and works to maintain a stable banking system across the country. Today the Federal Reserve plays a key role in regulating the national money supply, inflation, and employment.
16th amendment
Income tax
