Isolationism
The belief that a country should stay out of problems and issues around the world and focus on fixing problems at home. The US try to stay isolationist towards problems in Europe.
Interventionism
The belief that a country should get involved in problems and issues around the world. The US became more interventionist during the era of imperialism
The Maine
US battleship that was destroyed in Cuba killing hundreds of Americans. Public suspicion that Spain attacked the Maine lead to the US to declaring war on Spain.
Yellow journalism
Newspapers and magazines reporting information that was not proven or exaggerated in order to increase sales. Exaggerated stories about Spain led to the American public demanding war against Spain.
Spanish-American war
The US defeated Spain in this war and gained control of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines.
Big stick diplomacy
Teddy Roosevelt strategy to build up US military strength in order to gain influence in the world. This policy led to military, particularly naval, expansion.
Panama Canal
US sent warships to force Columbia to give up Panama so that the US could build a canal connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The canal project cost US millions of dollars and thousands of lives while greatly speeding transportation and increasing trade overseas.
Spheres of influence
Areas where imperialist gained partial control over territory. European imperialist established spheres of influence in China while the Munro doctrine declared Latin America to be with in the US sphere of influence
Hawaii
US military forces help overthrow the Hawaiian queen after several years of debate US annexed Hawaii.
War in the Philippines
US took possession from Spain and fought a long and deadly war with the Filipinos who wanted independence from the US
Materials and markets
This was the main goal of imperialists - to gain resources and places to sell their products
Gen. weylers prison camps
Spanish general set up detention camps in Cuba where many Cubans died from mistreatment. This helped motivate the US to go to war with Spain
White man’s burden
Poem by Rudyard Kipling that reflected the imperialist belief that conquering territories around the world would bring a better government, economy, culture, and religion to those regions.
Treaty of Paris
Ended the Spanish-American war and gave the US control over the Philippines, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Guam.
Anti-imperialists
People that opposed imperialism. In America, anti-imperialists joined together to oppose the US imperialistic policies.
