Definition of professional services
Those practiced on the basis of relevant professional qualifications in a personal, responsible and professionally independent capacity, by those providing intellectual and conceptual services in the interest of the client and the public
Vocation
Occupation to which someone is especially drawn or for which they are particularly suited to or trained for
Trade
Occupation that requires manual skills and specialist training
Profession
Vocation founded upon specialised educational training
Should supply objective counsel and service to others
May be a European Community directive defining professionalism
Veterinary surgery as a protected occupation
All UK vets must hold diploma of RCVS to treat and diagnose animals
Self-regulated by RCVS
Professional person traits
– Undergoes formal education and training in a profession. The standards of education are set by regulatory body
– The professional person serves an important aspect of public interest and the general good of society
– Conducts themselves in accordance with a recognised code of conduct or ‘Professional Ethics’
