Define a profession
A profession continuously enlarges its body of knowledge, functions autonomously in formulation of policy, and maintains by force of organization or concerted opinion high standards of achievement and conduct.
Define members of a profession
Members are committed to continuing study, place service above personal gain, and are committed to providing practical services vital to human and social welfare.
Define professional practice
Practice is the purposeful application of knowledge, skills, and techniques to achieve predefined goals, utilizing compatible frameworks and models that do not compromise the shared value system.
What are the 3 dimensions all professional groups must follow?
Normative dimension
Evaluative dimension

Define Normative dimension
Includes values and ethics supporting the idea of self regulation (ie. APTA code of ethics)
Define Evaluative dimension
Includes overseeing standards of practice and guiding professional activity (ie. state regulatory boards for licensure – MO Board of Healing Arts)
Define Cognitive dimension
Includes standards for education and demonstration of mastery of appropriate practice skills and clinical application ie. school accreditation CAPTE.

What are the multi professional views on professionalism?
It’s a continuous process.
Behaviors must be explicitly stated.
Values learned through clinical MODELING.
Pro behaviors are not natural.
What are Health Care Professionals?
Leaders in specialized areas who make sound decision and contribute expert opinions.
Problem solvers who demonstrate accountability, responsibility, analyze client needs, communicate effectively, pursue consultations, and work effectively with other disciplines.
Professionals demonstrate initiative, empathy, dependability, and organizational skills.
Define developmental framework
similar to psychosocial development.
Students and clinicians evolve over time, require changes in behaviors and thinking. Occasionally this leads to feelings of imbalance.
Define the model for ability based assessment in PT education.
Transition from classroom to clinic.
Difficulties are NOT usually from knowledge or skills, but under developed professional behaviors.
