Purpose of the NCLEX-RN Examination
(NCLEX)
- Safeguard the public from unsafe practitioners
- assist state BON in determining candidates’ capabilities for performing “entry level” RN positions
Characteristics of the NCLEX-RN Examination
- Computerized “PASS / FAIL” examination
- Taken at candidates convienence
- must be completed in 6hr or less
- Official results–6 weeks, Unofficial results–<48 hrs
- New passing standard is considered every three years
NCLEX RN-Examination does NOT end until….

- Stability of the PASS / FAIL result is certain (95%)
- Time runs out
NCLEX RN-Examination determines if a candidate PASSES/FAILS according to three (3) rules:
- 95% confidence Interval rule
- Maximum-length examination rule
- if candidate is close to the passing standard, the computer will continue to give questions until maximum number of questions (265 questions) is reached
- Run out of time rule
- candidate runs out of time-and 95% confidence has not yet been determined. If the candidate has not answered the minimum number of questions= FAILURE
