What are the legal requirements for FP10 prescriptions?
Name and address of Patient
Age (only if under 12)
Prescribers Particulars and Address
Signature of Prescriber
Date - valid for 6 months ( sch 2,3,4 -28days)
What are the normal label requirements?
- Name of patient
- Name and address of the supplying pharmacy
- Name of medicine
- Directions for use
- Precaution (relating to the medicine use)
Rps also recommends:
• keep out of the reach and sight of children
• use this medicine only on your skin where applicable
How long are owings valid for?
- POMs, Sch 5 CDs, P and GSL - 6 months
- Sch 2,3,4 - 28 days
Applies to both NHS and private
What must entries into the POM register include- for POMs supplied to HCPs or organisations?
- Name, address, trade, business or profession - person to whom medicine was supplied to.
- Name, Quantity, Form, Strength- drug supplied
- Purpose - for which it was sold/supplied
- Date POM supplied
What is the prescription validity for oral retinoids and what is the MAX supply quantity?
- Rx - valid for 7 days
- Rx after 7 days - considered expired - refer back to prescriber
- If Rx expired pregnancy status must be reconfirmed by another pregnancy test
- Max supply quantity is 30 days ( more that 30 days possible if considered by prescriber as not under PPP)
What is the legal requirement for private prescriptions?
- Patient Name and Address
- Prescriber Particulars and Address
- Age (only if under 12)

- Date - 6 months (28 days for Sch 2,3,4)
For repeats, if a number is not stated, how many times can it be repeated?
• Once (dispensed twice)
How many times can oral contraceptives be repeated?
- Repeated five times (dispensed six times)
Can Sch 2 and 3 be repeated?
No
Can Sch 4 and 5 be repeated?
Yes
What do private Rx’s contain for repeats?
They contain a direction - ‚ dispensed more than once,
What are the private Rx record keeping requirements in the POM register?
Patient details
Prescriber details
Medicine details
Prescription date
Supply date
How long is POM register retained for ?
2 years
What are the Legal requirements for EEA/Swiss prescriptions?
- Patients - Full Name, Date of birth
- Prescribers - Full Name, Qualification, Address, Direct contact (email, address, telephone, fax number)
- Medicine - Name, Quantity, Form, Strength, Dosage details
- Prescriber signature
- Date - 6 Months (28 days for Sch 4 CDs)
- EEA/Swiss Sch 1, 2, 3 CDs prescriptions cannot be dispensed.

Written instructions for the sale, supply and/or administration of medicines to groups of patients who may not be individually identified before presentation.
