Production techniques and systems Flashcards
Computer Aided Design (CAD)?
Using computer software to draw, design and model on screen
Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM)?
Manufacturing products designed by CAD
Flexible manufacturing system (FMS)?
A system in which production is organised into cells of machines performing tasks
Computer numerically controlled (CNC)?
Machine tools that are controlled by a computer
Just in time (JIT).
A production method that means materiala and components are ordered to arrive and the product assembly point just in time for production
Lean manufacturing?
Focusing on reduction of waste when manufacturing
Adavantages of JIT and lean manufacturing?
A reduce need to keep large stockpiles of components and materials
Less space needed go keep stocks of components and materials
Smaller numbers of finished products to be stored and put into stock
Less waste
Companies that use JIT?
Nissan
Toyota
Dell
Advantages of CAM?
Creates a faster production process and generally uses the necessary amounts of raw materials
Advantages of CNC?
High flexibility
Can procude different products simultaneously
Can be set up to produce new products quickly and easily
How has 3D printing helped production?
Gave opportunities to make parts for all sorts of equipment
What is batch production?
Products are produced in small batches when needed. They can range in costs of 2-10k
What is mass production?
These products are produced in high volume, 10k plus. They are products in high demand
What is continous production?
These products are normally cheap and are often produced in developing countries where land and labour is cheap
