Modern Materials Flashcards
What are modern materials?
New materials developed to have properties that are useful when designing and making products
What is graphene?
A very thin two-dimensional layer of carbon that was discovered and extracted from graphite in 2004
Properties of Graphene?
Very strong and very light material
Harder than diamond
300 times stronger than steel
Currenctly lightests known material
Transparent
Conducts electricity and hear better than copper
Extremely flexible
Common uses of graphene?
Protective clothing
Vehicles
Buildings
Solar cells
Disadvantages of graphene?
Not very good at collecting electrical current produced inside the solar cell
What could graphene lead to?
Foldable televisions or computers
Virtual curtsins or
Intelligent windows
What is metal foam?
A metal that has gas injected into it when it is a liquid state
Properties of metal foam?
Very lightweight
Has high compressive strength
Can absorb energy well
Common uses of metal foam?
Soundproofing or crash protection in vehicles
Body armour
Filtration
Prosthetics (artificial body parts) for animals
What is titanium?
A pure metal and fourth most abundent metal
Properties of titanium?
High corrosion resistant, even to salt water and chlorine
High strength to density ration
Common uses of titanium?
Concord planes
Knee replacements
What metals can titanium be alloyed with?
Aluminium and vanadium.
What are coated metals?
Metals that have been coated by other materials
What kind of coated materials are there?
Anodised aluminium
Nickel plated steels
Polymer-coated aluminium
