Production Processes Flashcards
What are the two main methods of production?
Job production and flow production.
What is job production?
Producing one item at a time, often for a specific customer (e.g., shipbuilding).
What is flow production?
Continuous production of standardized products on an assembly line (e.g., cars, cola).
What are the advantages of job production?
High quality, unique products, motivated workers.
What are the advantages of flow production?
Economies of scale, faster production, automation improves efficiency.
What are the disadvantages of job production?
Expensive, time-consuming, hard to scale up
What are the disadvantages of flow production?
High initial costs, repetitive work reduces motivation, inflexible to changes.
What is lean production?
A production method that minimizes waste and maximizes efficiency.
What is Just-in-Time (JIT) production?
Stock arrives as needed, reducing storage costs
What are the disadvantages of JIT?
Risk of delays stopping production, inability to handle demand surges.
