Production Processes Flashcards

1
Q

What is extrusion?

A

When a material is pushed through a die to create complex shapes that are consistent in length and cross-sectional area.
(Pushed with a hydraulic piston)

Q

What is Milling?

A

Using a rotary cutter to remove material from a workpiece. This can be done by hand or a CNC input (Computer numerical control).
E.g CNC router

What is turning?

A

When a rotating workpiece is cut using a cutting tool to remove material usually in a cylindrical form. (Lathes)

Q

What is stamping?

A

Involves placing a flat sheet metal into a press and using a toll or die to punch it or remove a shape ready for another process.

Q

What is forming?

A

When mechanical deformation changes the shape of a material so it is permanently deformed without adding or removing material.
E.g. press moulding or vacuum forming.

Q

What is stereo lithography?

A

An additive manufacturing process that uses a vat of liquid UV-curable photopolymer resin and a UV laser to build parts one layer at a time.

3d printing with uv resin and uv laser arm/ moving mirror.
Can be very quick.

Q

What is selective laser sintering?

A

Uses a high power laser to solidify powered polymer (sinter) layer by layer. There is no need for supports due to the powder.
Has been modified to work with metal, glass and ceramics.
