production of proteins Flashcards
1
Q
what are the four functions of albumin?
A
- binding and transport of lipid soluble molecules through the blood
- maintenance of colloid osmotic pressure
- acts as a free radical scavenger
- anticoagulant effects
2
Q
what 3 reasons cause low albumin levels?
A
- decreased synthesis - liver disease or resection
- increased catabolism - this would be a slow decline as production can increase 2-3x
- increased loss - nephrotic syndrome, exudative loss due to burns, haemorrhage etc.
3
Q
what controls the production albumin?
A
changes in oncotic pressure and osmolarity in the livers extravascular space
4
Q
how much albumin is produced a day?
A
6-12g
5
Q
globulins are another type of plasma proteins. what are their functions?
A
-antibody functions - mostly gamma globulins which aren’t made by the liver
- transport substances through the blood
- lipids - lipoproteins
- iron - transferrin
- copper - caeruloplasmin
6
Q
what clotting factors are made by the liver?
A
all of them except calcium (IV) & von willebrand factor (VIII)
