liver storage Flashcards
what 4 things are stored in the liver?
Iron
fat soluble vitamins
glycogen
minerals
what is iron stored as in the liver?
ferritin
what is iron transported round the body as?
transferrin
where is iron utilised?
- haemoglobin made in the bone marrow
- myoglobin
where is vitamin A stored in the liver?
Ito cells in the space of disse (high levels stored to prevent deficiency for 10 months)
what is vitamin As function?
vision (retinal pigments)
healthy skin
growth and reproduction
what is the function of vitamin D and where is it stored?
increases calcium reabsorption in the intestinal tracts & stored in Ito cells
what is vitamin Es function?
antioxidant - scavenges reactive oxygen species
B12 is stored in the liver how long can it prevent deficiency for?
> 1 year
what are the 2 sites of storage for glycogen?
Liver - 200g
muscle - 150g
what is the function of storing glycogen?
so it can be readily mobilised to form glucose to maintain blood glucose levels (it’s the secondary energy reservoir with lipids being primary)
