Q

What is casting

A

A mould that is pre-made and special materials are poured down that fill the mould and cast the shape. A runner forms the shape and a riser lets the air out

Q

What is die casting

A

Melting a metal, ramming it into a mould and applying pressure to let it set, like when we made the pewter necklace

Q

What’s injection/blow moulding

A

Like die casting but using a hydraulic system to keep it in place, turned by a screw to transport. Blow moulding uses pressure to form around the outside of the given shape as the spilt mould closes

16
Q

Why might a product have a finish

A

Look more attractive, protect from weathering

17
Q

Dip-coating - what is it

A

Powder with air blown through to behave like a liquid, the product is dipped in. Powder coating is a more attractive version of this

18
Q

Different forms of printing

A

Lithography - Commercial printing onto paper and card
Screen printing - Fabrics, squeegee
Flexography - Plastics - carrier bags
Embossing - Stamping, a raised platform
