Production Flashcards
What are four methods of production and what are they?
1) Job= work on one product then move onto another product
2) Flow= continuously making one product
3) Batch= make a set number of one product then make another batch of something else
4) cell= dividing up production into separate self contained areas that are each responsible for a set of work
What are pros and cons to cell production?
Pros- wasted is reduced
- increase workers commitment
Cons- breakdown of machinery will stop production
- needs more staff
What are 4 ways to improve production?
- less imports of goods
- investment
- increase motivation
- better technology
pros and cons to job production
pros- quality is high, products can be customer made, workers are motivated because work is varied
cons- high labour cost because need skilled workers, production may be slo, wide range of tools
pros and cons to batch
pros- workers are less likely to specialise in one process, unit costs are lower because output higher and production is flexible
cons- careful planning and coordination needed, if batches are small costs will still be high
pros and cons to flow
pros- output produced very quickly, very low unit costs due to EOS
cons- products may be too standardised, huge set up costs and low worker motivation
What is lean production?
Uses less of everything, including factory space, time and resources
What are pros of lean production?
-raises productivity
-reduces costs
-reduced number of defective products
What is Just in time?
Type of lean production, only holds amount of stock needed
What are pros and cons to JIT?
Pros: - rescued waste because less storage costs and reduce risk of stock not being sold or going off
- higher cost flow
Cons: -higher average unit costs as can’t gain EOS when purchasing raw material
- very reliant on suppliers= if they fail to deliver on time=no sales
- risk of not meeting demand
