Product Design Yr08 Sum1 Flashcards
1.1 polymers
Synthetic material mostly made from oil – usually called plastic.
1.2 thermo forming polymer
A polymer/plastic that can be reshaped by the application of heat – can be recycled into other products.
1.3 thermosetting polymer
A polymer (plastic) that cannot be reshaped by heating – non-recyclable.
1.4 ductility
The ability of a material to permanently change shape by being stretched, without breaking (tensile force).
1.5 malleability
Ability to permanently change shape by pressing or rolling ( compressive stress).
1.6 plasticity
The ability of a material to change shape permanently without cracking or breaking.
1.7 stiffness
Ability to resist bending.
1.8 acrylic
A thermoforming plastic material with excellent strength and stiffness and durability.
1.9 HPDE (High Density polyethylene)
A thermoforming plastic polymer. It has high tensile strength. It is used in the production of plastic bottles.
2.1 environment
The surroundings or conditions in which a living things live or operate.
2.2 sustainability
Not causing permanent damage to the environment and not using up finite resources.
2.3 finite resources
Resources that cannot be replaced, such as oil.
2.4 Infinite resources
Resources that will not run out, such as wind.
2.5 Life cycle analysis
Looking at the environmental impact associated with all the stages of the life cycle of a product.
2.6 recycling
The process of converting waste materials into new materials and objects.
