Product and Design Mix Flashcards
What are the 2 ways we define product and service design?
1) The combination of factors needed to design a product.
2) The aesthetics, functions and cost of the product.
What are aesthetics and what do they represent?
They are the senses responding to a product. They represent the tastes, looks, scents and feels of the product. They can even be the emotional attachment that a customer has with a product.
What is the function?
This is not just what the product does but also how it fits for purpose, how safe it is and how well it performs.
Why is the cost so important?
It’s important because there has to be a minimum price in order to still retain the product’s quality, push away rivals and produce efficiently. A lower cost of production gives the business competitive advantage because they can pass on lower prices to customers.
How does bespoke design change social trends in the design mix?
It means custom made or custom built with the customer’s own ideas.
How does standard design change social trends in the design mix?
They’re products or services that are sold as standard and the customer can’t add any extra features or benefits
How can efficiencies change the design mix?
They can be achieved by changing the types of materials used by updating the technology in production
Why is the design for waste minimisation very important?
The decisions made by designers have a major influence on the type and amount of waste. You also have to decide what and how to build, what to demolish and renovate and what materials to use and how they impact the waste created during a project.
Why are re-usable products a good thing?
It allows consumers to use the product more than once for a certain amount of time as well as being able to save lots of money.
What do we mean by ethical sourcing?
It is ensuring that products are created by qualified workers in safe facilities. It also means buying from sustainable sources.
