Prochaskas Six Stage Model Of Behaviour Change Flashcards
What does prochaskas six stage model of behaviour change suggest? (Intro)
- Prochaskas model is a 6 stage model which explains the cyclical process of bhv change e.g. giving up an add
- It sees add bhv change as a pos and dynamic process and recognises relapse is an inevitable and natural part of process
- Prochaska emphasises importance of getting right intervention at the right time in this process
What are the 6 stages in the model of behaviour change?
Pre - contemplation
Contemplation
Preparation
Action
Maintenance
Termination
What is meant by the pre - contemplation stage and what is the intervention?
- indv doesnt consider themselves as having an add
- isnt thinking abt changing bhv which could be due to denial or demotivation
- intervention would focus on helping add consider the need for change
What is meant by the contemplation stage and what is the intervention?
- indv is now thinking about changing bhv
- aware of financial costs and benefits and need for action
- intervention would be ways to help indv understand that the pros of overcoming the add outweigh the costs
What is meant by the preparation stage and what is the intervention?
- indv believes pros of changing bhv outweighs costs
- decide to change
- intervention would be receiving support in making a plan to quit add
What is meant by the action stage and what is the intervention?
- plan has been put into action and indv is continuing with their bhv change
- e.g. behavioural/cog therapies
- intervention is learning coping strategies indv will need to maintain change of bhv
What is meant by the maintenance stage and what is the intervention?
- indv has maintained change of bhv for more than 6 months
- focusing on preventing relapse using avoidance strategies
- intervention is applying the coping strategies they have learned and use support they have to prevent relapse
What is meant by the termination stage and what is the intervention?
- indv no longer turns to add bhvs to cope with stress/anx
- confident in ability to resist add bhvs
- final stage may not be possible for all ppl to achieve
- most appropriate goal for some would be to prolong maintenance for as long as they can, accepting that relapse is likely to occur at some point
- no intervention required
What does this model say about relapse?
- relapse is not considered as failure to changing add bhv
- can occur at any time
- indv will simply return to earlier stages such as contemplation and preparation and work their way back up again
What are the three AO3 PEELS to evaluate prochaskas six stage model of behaviour change?
Weakness - too complicated
Strength - pos view of relapse
Weakness - social desirability
