Prochaska's Six stage model Flashcards
What are the two sections
1- Pre-action stages (related to intention to behaviour change)
2- Post-action stages (related to behavior)
What are the 6 stages
- Pre-contemplation
- Contemplation
- Preparation
- Action
- Maintenance
- Termination
Pre-contemplation
Where the person has no intention of changing their behaviour in the near future, possibly because they are unaware that it is a problem
Contemplation
Where the person is aware their behviour is problematic, but are not quite yet commited to do anything about it
Preparation
Where those who are prepared to change their addictive behaviour start to make small changes
Action
Involves the most change and is where te person modifies their behaviour in order to overcome their problem. They are classified as being in this stage when they have changed for between 1 day and 6 months
Maintenance
Where the person has to work hard to prevent relapse
Termination
Once the person enters this stage they are no longer tempted to revert to their previous behaviour and often add new goals to achieve more success
Prochaska claimed only about 20% of people ever make it to this stage
AO3 - Prochaska
- research (Velicer)
- counter research (aveyard et al)
- practical applications
- divisions might not be that clear cut - Littell and Girvin
- lacks cultural validity - Daoud
- not all or nothing
- humane view - relapse is not failure
Key Assumptions by Prochaska
- Doesn’t view change as a ‘single event’ but emphasises the gradual change of nature
- The model includes ‘pre-action’ and ‘post action’ stage and is cyclical : individuals move through stages in order, but relapse to a prior stage might occur at any point
- Final stage was added to allow for the fact that individuals can actually break out of the cycle and be free of the undesirable behavior
