processual and post-processual interpretations Flashcards
processual interpretations
functioning of societies using two different types of models grounded (ecological and materialistic views of culture)
processual interpretations systems models
view society as composed of different parts and focus on the study of these different parts and how they interact - to monitor the flow of matter, energy, and information within and between systems
two types of systems available
closed systems and open systems
closed systems
exchange matter, energy and information only internally
have inputs and outputs to maintain equilibrium in closed system
open systems
exchange matter, energy and information freely between systems -change coming from inside or outside
models of change
factors involved in cultural adaptation are thought to be of two types
- single factors that cause change
- multiple, interrelated factors that cause change
post processual observe two important deficits in the processual approach
- individuals and smaller interest groups did not really factor into these explanations
- change must be both initiated and accepted by members of a community
