Employee selection involves gathering info about applicants and using info to choose the most appropriate one.
Businesses must effectively select employees to fill vacant positions to increase productivity n reduce costs. (as the amnt of time and money spent on selection depends on the role and how urgent canditate is needed)
define DEVELOPMENT
Process of developing and improving skills and knowledge of staff through induction, ongoing training and further professional development
impact of effective develeopment processes
Effective development-> staff retained-> more motivation + comitment to business -> more competent in job -> should be recognised for work achievements -> more motivation and work satisfaction
what does development involve
- Giving performance appraisals: used to assess performance against criteria of standards and identify employees strong and weak areas, and fix them with training and support
- Monitoring and controlling areas staff need more assitance
- Mentoring or coaching

main objectives of performance appraisals
- identify employee training and development needs
- provide feedback from managemnt to employye’s work performance
- act as a measure against which promotion and pay rises can be determined

define MAINTENANCE
Process of managing staff needs for health and safety, industrial relations, legal responsibilities- including compensation and benefits of all staff
what does MAINTENANCE focus on
the processes needed to retain staff and manage their wellbeing-
- communication through meetings and social functions -> positive culture
- ensuring financial needs are met through wages, salary, bonuses, fringe benefits eg car
- non monetary benefits eg. flexible hours, variety
define SEPARATION
Process of employees leaving voluntarily or involuntarily though dismissal or retrenchment processes

Resignation: person leaves job for change, better pay but must provide 1-4 weeks notice
Voluntary redundancy: nominate themselves as job no longer needed due to merger/takeover or technology

Dismissal-
- summary dismissal: instant form of dismissal for those employees involves in serious misconduct, absenteeism, negligence
- Dismissal after warnings: eg. for those failing to perform, continual lateness, disrespect
Unfair dismissal: when employee is dismissed by employer and belives the action is harsh, unreasonable or unjust
