What are prosses
The physical actions of the sea, wind, and weather that shape the coastline, including erosion, transportation, deposition, and weathering
What is erosion?
The wearing away of rock by the movement of water, wind, or ice. Coastal erosion is caused by hydraulic action, abrasion, attrition, and solution.
What is transportation?
The movement of sediment along the coast by waves and currents. The four types are traction, saltation, suspension, and solution.
What is deposition?
The process where material carried by the sea is dropped due to loss of energy, forming features like beaches, spits, and bars.
What is weathering?
The breakdown of rocks in place by physical, chemical, or biological processes, often weakening cliffs and aiding erosion.
What is mass movement?
The downhill movement of sediment due to gravity, including landslides, slumping, and rockfalls, which reshape the coastline.
What are bays and headlands?
A headland is a resistant rock jutting into the sea, while a bay is a softer rock area eroded into an inlet, forming beaches.
What is CASS (Coastal Erosion Processes)?
Stands for Corrasion (abrasion), Attrition, Solution, and Hydraulic action, which are the main ways the sea erodes the coast.
What is a wave cut platform?
A flat rock surface left behind when waves erode a cliff at the base, causing it to collapse and retreat over time.
