Process of deposition And Transportation Flashcards
What is Process of deposition?
It is found in the lower course of the river. When the sea or river loses energy, it drops the material it has been carrying.
What is Deposition
Is the dropping of material by the river
Factors leading to deposition include?
-At the end of the river’s journey (the mouth)
-shallow water
- when the amount of water decreases
-little or no wind
What is Transportation?
the processes by which the sediment is moved along – for example, pebbles rolled along a river-bed or sea shore.
How many different ways can sediment / materials be moved along the seabed or river?
4
Beach material can be moved in four different ways. What are they
Solution
Suspension
Saltation
Traction
What is Solution?
- when minerals in rocks like chalk and limestone are dissolved in sea water and then carried in solution. The load is not visible.
What is Suspension?
small particles such as silts and clays are suspended in the flow of the water.
What is Saltation?
where small pieces of shingle or large sand grains are bounced along the sea bed.
What is Traction?
where pebbles and larger material are rolled along the sea bed.
What is Bedload?
Material carried by a river as it moves
