Long and Cross Profiles Flashcards
What are the 3 Courses of the river
- Upper
- Middle
- Lower
What happens in the upper course
- Headwater streams swiftly flow down steep mountain slopes. This cuts deep v - shaped valleys
- Water falls and Rapids occur in this course
What happens in the middle course?
- Lower elevation steams merge to flow down gentle slopes
- Valleys broaden as coalescing rivers start to meander
What happens in the Lower Course?
- At the lowest point a river meanders across a broad, nearly flat valley and flood plain.
- A the mouth it MAY divide into separate channels.
What does the river Long Profile show?
How a rivers steepness changes as it flows from the Source to its Mouth
What does the river Cross Profile Show?
The shape of the river channel
Which course of the river does Erosion happen?
Upper Course
Which course of the river does transportation happen?
Middle
What is deposition?
Where the river drops its material (rocks/sand/pebbles) carried by the flow of water.
Which course of the river does deposition happen in?
Lower Course
Describe the characteristics of the Upper Course Long Profile
- Very Steep Gradient
- V Shaped Valley
- Steep sides
Describe the characteristics of the Upper Course Cross profile
Narrow shallow channel
Describe the characteristics of the Middle Course Long Profile
- Medium Steep gradient
- Gently sloping valley side
Describe the characteristics of the Middle Course Cross profile
Wider deeper channel
Describe the characteristics of the Lower Course Long Profile
- Gentle Gradient
- Very Wide
- Almost Flat Valley
