Indications
Identify the appropriate modality by considering the indications.
4 Steps for preparing the pt.
1) Describe to the pt. what you will be doing.
2) Explain the purpose of the modality.
3) What they may experience.
4) How long they will be engaged with the modality.
Positioning
Position the pt. so the body part is in a relaxed position and they are in a comfortable position.
Precautions
Require you to make an informed decision about whether we should continue by asking more questions (used to prevent harm)
Contraindications
Reasons to decide to not use a modality because it may cause more harm.
2 Factors to always assess before applying a modality
1) Skin integrity
2) Sensation
Response
Assess response shortly after applying the modality and again at the end by asking questions and checking the skin.
