Process Devices Flashcards
What due process devices do ?
Take the signal away from the input stage of a system and act on it by changing it in some way
Example: introducing a time delay, counting the number of times something happens or making a decision
What is a good example of an electoral conductor and what do they do ?
Copper wire
Allow for electrical current to flow through
However electrical insulators do not allow electrical current through
Eg PVC plastic that surrounds a wire to make it safe
What are semi conductors ?
A material that has an electrical conductivity value falling between that of a conductor and insulator
Materials like silicon control wether it is going to conduct or prevent
What is a diode ?
A semi conductor as it allows for electrical current to flow one way but not the other
What elements can be added to silicon to change its properties to that of a semi conductor ?
Boron
Phosphorus
This is known as doping
What are integrated circuits ?
Tiny chips that contain resistors, capacitors and transistors which work together to complete the process they have been designed for
Eg time or counter
Where are intergrated circuits used ?
Smaller products
Reduce outer packaging or housing
They cost less than the average sized component used together in a circuit
What are microprocessors ?
The main processors inside a computer and they are designed to to be programmed to perform a different functions
What do microprocessors contain and where are they used ?
Contain
- small transistors, resistors, diodes and capacitors
Used
- car keys to the car and from electronic toys to mobile phones
