Wash handing
Before process wash your hands efficiently and be bare below elbow
Preparation of equipment
Clean your tray
Check allergy status
Venepuncture equipment:
Tourniquet
Skin decontamination wipe (2% chohexedine and 70 alcohol)
Winged safety infusion device
Safety needle and holder
Vacutainer
Blood collection tubes
Tapes
Sterile gauze
Vein selection
Antecubital fossa and medial veins
Metacarpal veins
Cannulation
Cannula
Tourniquet
Sterile gauze
Sterile IV dressing
Post flush 10mls of saline
Ensure when your cannulation to angle it 10-30 degrees
Vein selection for cannula
Cephalic vein: can be used
Antecubital fossa and medial veins are used for venepuncture not cannula
Metacarpal veins can be used but for short term cannulation
Digital veins can be used if access elsewhere is not gained
Cannula colours
Orange- rapid transfusion in theatres and emergency
Grey- same as orange but less flow rate
Green- 18g. TPN and large volume of fluids
Pink 20G- infusing blood components or large volumes of fluids or those on long term medications and those receiving 2-3L of fluids a day
Blue 22G- most common one
Yellow 24G- patients with fragile veins
