Procedures Flashcards
angiogram
Involves the injection of a contrast medium into the artery so that x-rays may be taken of the blood flow
Special x-ray
arteriogram
Involves the injection of a contrast medium into the artery so that x-rays may be taken of the blood flow
Special x-ray
angiography
Involves the injection of a contrast medium into the artery so that x-rays may be taken of the blood flow
Special x-ray
angioplasty
Dilation of an arterial stenosis using a balloon catheter
Special x-ray
arthrogram
X-ray of a joint after injection of contrast medium
Special x-ray
cardiac catheterization
The insertion of a catheter into a blood vessel and guiding it into the interior of the heart
Special x-ray
ERCP
Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatogram
A test in which an endoscope is inserted down the esophagus, through the stomach and duodenum, and into the biliary tract. A radiopaque dye is then injected into the ducts of the biliary tract, and x-rays are taken of the biliary tract.
Special x-ray
hysterosalpingogram
X-ray pictures of the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes
Special x-ray
lymphangiogram
x-ray of the lymph channels and lymph nodes after injection of contrast medium
Special x-ray
myelogram
x-ray of the lymph channels and lymph nodes after injection of contrast medium
Special x-ray
PTHC
Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiogram
X-ray study of the liver and biliary tract after injection of a radiopaque dye into the liver
Special x-ray
T-tube cholangiogram
X-ray pictures are taken 1-3 days after a cholecystectomy of the biliary ducts. The contrast medium is injected through a t-tube.
Special x-ray
venogram
Contrast examination of the venous system
Special x-ray
voiding cystourethrogram
Contrast medium is instilled into the bladder via catheter and x-rays are taken of the structure of the bladder while the patient is voiding
Special x-ray
IVP
Intravenous pyelogram
X-ray pictures are taken as the contrast medium passes through the kidneys, ureters, and bladder
x-ray with contrast
retrograde pyelogram
Visualization of the urinary tract through ureteral catheterization
X-ray with contrast
BaE
Barium enema
Patient is given an enema with barium contrast medium and an x-ray picture is taken of the large intestine
X-ray with contrast
UGI & SBFT
upper gastrointestinal and small bowel follow-through
X-ray pictures are taken of the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, and small intestine
X-ray with contrast
UGI includes barium meal, Stomach and duodenum
X-ray pictures are taken of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum
X-ray with contrast
ECG
electrocardiogram
Graphic recording of the heart’s electrical activity. Generated by the conduction system of the heart
cardiac catheterization
angiography
Medical imaging technique in which an x-ray is taken to visualize blood filled structures including arteries, veins, and heart chambers.
PTCA
percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty
Procedure designed to dilate (widen or expand) narrowed coronary arteries
CABG
coronary artery bypass graft
Type of open heart surgery done to reroute (bypass) blood around a clogged artery
EEG
electroencephalography
A diagnostic procedure that measures/records the electrical activity of the brain.
EP
evoked potentials
A group of diagnostic tests that measure changes in various parts of the brain produced by visual, auditory, or somatosensory stimuli
VEP
visual evoked potentials
A response to visual stimuli. Sometimes used to confirm cerebral silence (brain death)
SSEP
somatosensory evoked potentials
Done to record a response to a painless stimulation of a peripheral nerve.
BAEP
brainstem auditory evoked potentials
Recording of electrical activity coming from the brain stem. Used to evaluate the cause of symptoms such as loss of balance, weakness, nausea, vomiting, hearing loss, unusual ringing of ears, headaches, vision problems, or numbness.
EMG
electromyography
Method of recording electrical activity of selected muscles at rest and during exercise through a needle electrode.
Aids in diagnosis of primary and secondary muscular and neuromuscular disease such as Parkinson’s disease, muscular dystrophy, and myasthenia gravis
ENG
A diagnostic test done to look at voluntary and involuntary eye movements. This procedure evaluates the acoustic nerve, which aids with hearing and balance.
