Question 1

Action for class 1 tyre fire/major

Answer 1

Set up 300m exclusion zone, maintain isolation for 24hrs, inspection by tyre co-ordinatior, or tyre contractor supervisor after 24hrs, if check is normal remove all affected tyres and inspect. For items 4 or 5 of class 1 fight the fire as per procedure.-

Question 2

Action for class 2 tyre fire/moderate

Answer 2

If a risk assessment determines not to fight the fire, set up 300m isolation zone, maintain isolation for a minimum of 8 hours, inspection to be carried out by tyre co-ordination or tyre contractor supervisor after 8 hours, if check is not normal isolate for further 16 hours, if. Heck is normal vehicle may be returned to work immediately or remove all affected tyres and inspect as determined by co-ord or contractor co-ord, if risk assessment determines to fight the fire fight as per procedure.

Question 3

Action for class 3 tyre fires/minor?

Answer 3

Set up 300m isolation zone, maintain isolation, have inspection carried out by by co-ord or tyre contractor supervisor, if check is normal as per procedure the vehicle may return to work or remove affected tyres and inspect as determined by co-ord or contract tyre supervisor.

Question 4

Tyre fire classes

Answer 4

Class 1 major: lightning strike, power line contact, whenever there is no clear indication of category of suspected tyre fire, heating of rim or rim components, vehicle fire or tyres flaming.
Class 2 moderate: hub or wheel involvement with flame but not extensive, brake fire not extending to the rim, extensive tyre separation, smoke continually emitting from tyre-no flame, strong smell of burning rubber, tyre friction causing heating and flames on tyre quickly extinguished and not extensive.
Class 3 minor: isolated tread separation in the crown, smoke or flash involving wheel motor hub or brake no flame, smoke from brakes, tyre seperate on smoking, minor rubber smell
