Q

Lost Communication

A

Stay in VFR, land as soon as practical if you can’t fix the problem.
Try to
-check volume and frequency
- go back to old frequency
- use second radio
- squawk 7600
- transmit blind
- Try to call with your phone
- fly to airfield check for gun signals or just manage traffic and runway conditions such as wind, and land when you can

Lost Procedure

A
  1. orbit around visible spot,
  2. GPS, foreflight, phone use direct to
  3. climb, reduce power
  4. communication if possible talk to atc to get vector or else
  5. turn back to told heading
  6. use VOR radials and distances

If getting lost during flight, the recovery procedure is the use of GPS (if available):
* Use NRST to locate the nearest airport or VOR;
* Use “Direct to” to proceed to a known waypoint;
* Use the moving map.

In case the pilot lost his position during navigation, and the GPS is not available, the following rules should be followed in order to regain awareness on the geographical position of the aircraft:

Circle: If able, you want to minimize your travel so you can orient to the location without anything changing and not get any further off track
Engage the autopilot if equipped.

Climb: Ceiling and visibility permitting (and if not entering other airspaces) climb to improve radio reception (comm and NAVAID) and forward visibility
Be sure not to fly around aimlessly, circle if required during a climb

Conserve: Operate the aircraft (when straight and level) at maximum endurance power setting. When oriented, fly max range and check your fuel state and determine how much time you have

Communicate: Request assistance on the area working frequency. Try to communicate using all available channels and NAVAIDs

Comply: If you are attempting landing at a strange field, circle it at a safe altitude and locate all obstacles and hazards. Determine wind direction and active runway and get a rough estimate of runway length and width. Never fly above overcast layers.

Q

If engine failure what steps

A
  1. Speed: keep 71kts, trim
  2. Find suitable field to land: yellow or green, long enough, take wind into consideration, and any cable tension lines etc.
  3. Try to restart engine: fuel pump on, carb. heat opposite, opposite fuel tank, ignition key, otherwise Engine Securing Checklist
  4. Maday call, squwak 7700
