Procedures Flashcards
Neuroplasty
is the decompression of intact nerves.
Lumbar Puncture
aka spinal tap, obtains cerebrospinal fluid by insertion of a needle into the subarachnoid space in the lumbar region
What are common procedures performed on nerves?
injection, destruction, decompression, suture/repair
Posterior approach
surgical opening was formed from the back
Anterior approach
surgical opening formed from the front
Arthrodesis
surgical fusion of joints
Approach procedure
is the method used to obtain exposure of the lesion (ex: anterior cranial fossa, middle cranial fossa, posterior cranial fossa)
Definitive procedure
is what was done to the lesion (ex: biopsy, excision, repair, resection)
Shunt
a draining device that enables fluid to flow from one area to another
Ventricular puncture
puncture through the top portion of the skull
Cisternal puncture
is an approach at the base of the skull
Craniectomy/Craniotomy
incision into the skull with possible removal of a portion of the skull
Thyroidectomy
is the removal of all or part of the thyroid gland
Lobectomy
removal of one part or part of one of the thyroid gland lobes
Isthmusectomy
removes more thyroid tissue than a simple lobectomy and is performed when a larger margin of tissue is needed to be removed
