Medical Terminology Flashcards
There are 9 glands in the endocrine system but only 4 are included in CPT. What are they?
Thyroid
Parathyroid
Thymus
Adrenal
Thyroid gland
is composed of a right and left lobe on either side of the trachea, just below a large piece of cartilage
What are they two hormones secreted by the thyroid gland?
T3 triiodothyronine 20%
T4 thyroxine 80%
Parathyroid glands
are 4 small oval bodies located on the dorsal aspect of the thyroid gland
What hormone does the parathyroid glands secrete?
secretes parathyroid hormone (PTH)
PTH mobilizes calcium from bones into the bloodstream
Adrenal glands
are 2 small glands situated one on top of each kidney. there are two parts to each gland, cortex (outer portion) , medulla (inner portion)
The cortex of the adrenal glands secretes what hormone?
corticosteroids
The medulla of the adrenal glands secretes what hormone?
catecholamines
Thymus gland
located behind the breast bone, in front of the heart and is involved in the development of the immune system
Pancreas
is an organ that is located behind the stomach, and the head of the organ is attached to the duodenum (first section of the small intestine)
Carotid body
is tissue rich in capillaries that act as receptors
Are all endocrine glands ductless?
Yes, which means they secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream
Central nervous system
contains the brain and spinal cord
Peripheral nervous system
contains 12 pairs of cranial nerves and 31 pairs of spinal nerves
Cerebrum
largest part of the brain
Cerebral hemispheres
paired halves of the cerebrum. each hemisphere is subdivided into 4 major lobes named for the cranial bones they overlie:
Frontal
Parietal
Occipital
Temporal
Cerebellum
posterior part of the brain that coordinates the voluntary muscle movements and maintains balance
Cerebral cortex
outer region of the cerebrum (gray matter)
Fissure
groove in the surface of the cerebral cortex
Medulla oblongata
part of the brain located just above the spinal cord that controls breathing, heartbeat, and blood vessel size
Ventricles
reservoirs in the interior of the brain filled with cerebrospinal fluid
What are the structures that connect the cerebrum with the spinal cord?
Cerebellum
Pons (part of the brain stem)
Medulla oblongata (part of the brain stem)
