A
- Became incredibly negative
- New lightweight cameras allowed for a ‘Living room war’ where films could be shown on television
- Famous reporters said the war was unwinnable
- They lost the support of average Americans

- College students protested lots
- US flags were burned (A crime in the US)
- Violent clashes between students and Police
- Leaking of the My Lai MAssacre intensified opposition

A
- National Guard opened fire at a protest at Kent State University
- Four students were killed
- Increased opposition as the war was now killing USA civilians as well

How did Civil rights leaders criticise the war?
A
- Johnson had promised to reduce poverty and MLK said he couldn’t achieve this due to all the money spent on Vietnam
- The Draft was unfair as college students could avoid the draft but college was hard to achieve by African-Americans
- Muhammed Ali refused the draft and was stripped of his world title

- There was a scandal involving listening devices being put into the Democratic Party’s government building (The opposed of Nixon)
- Nixon denied being involved but was quickly proven involved and was threatened with impeachment

What was the timeline of Peace Talks?
A
- 1969- Secret talks fail as the North Vietnamese government wanted all US forces immediately out of Vietnam
- 1972-War intensifying lead to attacks on both sides continuing
- October 1972- USSR started to support Nixon in ending the war and they reached a provisional agreement
- January 1973- The agreement was signed by everyone involved
- March 1973- All US forces had withdrawn

-Vietnam became Communist in 1974

What was the overall cost in Vietnam?
A
- 5 million people had to leave their homes as ‘Boat People’ where many were killed by pirates or drowned
- Lots of corruption
- Poverty,Prostitution and Drug Abuse was rife
- The Environment was badly damaged due to substances such as Agent Orange
- Lots of deaths after due to health defects from chemicals as well as unexploded bombs

- Lost respect
- Many soldiers were seen as baby killers and didn’t receive a heroes welcome as expected
- Many soldiers found it difficult to be civilians again
- High rate of Drug Abuse and PTSD from soldiers who fought in the war
