Problem Solving Flashcards
What are 5 problem solving techniques?
Abstraction Analogy Hypothesis Testing Lateral Thinking Means-ends Analysis Research Root Cause Analysis Trial and error
Define problem solving?
Works in with critical thinking and teamwork, Promotes continual improvement, Enhances innovation
Why do you ‘Frame’ a problem?
To get a better understanding of what the problem is. identify better solutions to get to the root cause.
What is Brainstorming?
Obtain many solutions or ideas among groups combining, developing these until an optimum is found!
What is Lateral thinking?
(similar to brainstorming)
Your laptop is not working, but you must read an important email What do you do?
Check battery. Check power point is on. Check that it’s plugged in. Buy or borrow another laptop. Go to a friend’s home
Consider new ideas, and solutions not obvious
What is Root Cause Analysis?
by Eliminating the cause of the problem
a reactive method of problem detection and solving rather than in-depth analysis
How can you analyse a problem?
Break down, Critical analyse the problem
Who, What, Why, Where, When, - How.
How can you identify the root cause of a problem?
Use an Issue Map
How can you identify possible solutions to a problem?
- Frame the problem
- Use a solution definition card
- Create a solutions map
How can you implement a solution to a problem?
- Develop a project plan.
- Manage the Plan
- Measure key elements.
What is abstraction?
The process is about solving a problem in a model of the system before applying it to the real problem
What is Hypotheses Testing?
Methodology focuses on assuming a possible explanation to a problem and to try to prove/disprove that assumption
What is Means-ends Analysis?
About choosing an action at each step to move closer to the goal
