problem solving Flashcards
You are faced with a situation where you have two patients in critical condition, but only one life-saving treatment is available. How do you make a decision?
Patient-Centered Approach: “My first priority would be to consider the medical needs of both patients. I would review the severity of each condition, the likelihood of survival with treatment, and the patient’s prognosis.”
Fairness and Transparency: “I would seek to involve senior medical staff in the decision-making process, ensuring that the decision is as fair and objective as possible. If necessary, I would discuss the situation with both patients’ families, being as transparent as possible while maintaining empathy.”
Ethical Principles: “I would strive to follow ethical principles like justice (fair allocation of resources) and non-maleficence (do no harm). If there is a protocol in place for resource allocation, I would adhere to it to ensure consistency and fairness.”
Reflection on the Decision: “Finally, I would reflect on the decision to ensure that it was made based on clinical evidence and ethical reasoning, and be prepared to communicate the reasoning clearly to all parties involved.”
