Problem of evil Flashcards
What does Hume say about the problem of evil
-God is not omnipotent
-God is not on I benevolent
Or evil does not exist
The problem for theism is the belief in a all living and powerful God
If god is all knowing and powerful, he must want to abolish evil and suffering because he would not want his beings to suffer unnecessarily
As evil and suffering still exists, is God still all knowing all loving and omniprotent?
Yes
Doessuffering test our faith in god ?
Yes, life is a test, we all have free will
Logical
The mere existence of evil is logically impossible with the existence of an all loving, all powerful God
Evidential
The amount of evil that exists is incompatible with the existence of an all loving and powerful God
What does the inconsistent triad consist of
Gods omnipotence
Gods omnibenevolenve
The existence of evil
Outline the three types of evil
Natural evil- evil caused in other ways such as a hurricane
Moral evil- evil caused y choice or murder
Evil- any unjust actions that cause suffering
What do monists believe
Monists believe that the universe is single and all good.
eVIL EXISTS IN OUR MINDS
What do Hindu and bUddhists believe
Suffering is not from god, god is not responsible for the suffering in this world
Solving the problem of evil
Aquila’s believed that God allowed evil to exist as a greater plan of his love.therefore, there is no logical contradiction Olin god being regarded as all loving and all powerful because he has a reason for evil to exist
What are theodicies
Theodicies are arguments that suggest that god is right to allow the existence of evil and suffering because they are necessary and essential
How does Augustine recognise evil and suffering
He notes that god is not able to abolish evil if he is not all willing, if he is not able to then he is not all powerful
Augustinian theodicy
Uses accounts of genesis
His theodicy argues that god Created the world and it was perfect, without the existence of evil and suffering
He defined evil as the probation of goodness, just as blindness is a privation of sight
Where does the existence of evil originate from
It originated from free will possessed by angels and humans that turned their back on god
Perfection was ruined by sin
Strengths of the Augustinian theodicy
Logical for religious believers/ they believe that Hod is all loving and powerful
It explains the problem of evil, gives religious believers hope
It’s soul deciding/ the notion of heaven and hell, through your actions, your will will be decided
Weaknesses of the Augustinian theodicy
Goes against the theory of evolution
Evil and suffering is still a problem in today’s world
If the world was created perfectly, there would be no knowledge of good and evil
Schleiermacher- there is logical contradiction to make the claim that a perfectly created world went wrong
Either the world was not perfect when god created it or god made it go wrong
Link to Adam and Eve disobeying god I
Is natural evil a punishment for moral evil
Yes, it occurred because of the loss of order in nature
Augustin
Irenaean theodicy
There are two stages to creation
1st stage- man was created as an immature being and has yet to grow
2nd stage/ there should be a time to change where man would respond to situations and become a ‘ child of god
IRENAEUS ARGUED THAT THE WORLD WAS CREATED IMPERFECTLY SO PEOPLE WOULD DO GOOD AND TURN TO GOD
We were made at a distance from god, epistemic distance
You do not need to experience evil to develop compassion
You also cannot guarantee a good outcome
Therefore, irenaud saw evil as necessary part of life, something that will make us into better people
.
Is god responsible for the existence of evil?
Itemaus said the world was mare imperfect so moral evil was the result of free will, allowing us to disobey God
Weaknesses of the irenaean theodicy
Everyone goes to heaven, immorality is not punished
The quantity and extremity of evil seems unacceptable
However irenaeus said that heaven was created for everyone
