probability and significance Flashcards
what is a null hypothesis?
- no difference between conditions
- stat tests determine whether this should be accepts or rejected
what is the level of significance/ probability?
point at which alternative hypothesis id accepted (usually greater than 0.05)
what is the critical value?
cut off point between acceptance and rejection of hypotheses
when should one tailed test be used?
when hypothesis is directional
when should 2 tailed test be used?
when hypothesis is non directional
what is usual level of significance?
- (p) value - 0.05/ 5%
- 0.01 for things with human cost
what is type 1 error?
null hypothesis rejected when it should have been accepted (false positive)
what is type 2 error?
null hypothesis accepted when it should have been rejected (false negative)
